What is Singapore Permanent Residence (PR)?

Obtaining a Singapore Permanent Residence (PR) status is a highly coveted milestone, granting you access to a wealth of professional opportunities and benefits. As a PR holder, you’ll enjoy reduced Additional Buyer’s Stamp Duty (ABSD) liabilities when purchasing private property, along with the ability to live, work, and study in Singapore without restrictions.

Benefits of Being a Singapore Permanent Resident (PR)

Singapore has one of the top three passports in the world, which makes its citizenship rights one of the most desirable to visitors from other countries. While being a citizen of Singapore entails many advantages and rewards, it also comes with a unique set of responsibilities.

Dual citizenship is not allowed in Singapore. Therefore, before they can finish the procedures to become a Singapore PR and ultimately a Citizen, all new citizens must renounce their current citizenship at their respective embassies. Singaporean children may maintain their dual citizenship up until the age of 21 or until enlisting in the NS (for males).

All male Singapore citizens and Permanent Residents (PRs) are expected to perform National Service under the Enlistment Act (NS). After completing Junior College (JC)/Polytechnic/Institute of Technical Education, NS-liable individuals must register for NS at the age of 16.5 and will be scheduled for enlisting at the age of 18, often before enrolling in university studies (ITE).

Upon turning 55, Singapore citizens and permanent residents are permitted to take the excess funds from their CPF accounts. The amount that can be withdrawn is determined by the balances in each of your CPF accounts. Your CPF Retirement Account (RA) will start paying you a monthly amount at age 65 and continue until your death. The amount of money left in your RA determines the monthly payout.
